Fireforest: When Forest Fire Met Forest Restoration

In August of 2020, the Cameron Peak Fire was racing uncontrollably towards communities in northern Colorado. As it reached the footprint of a past U.S. Forest Service prescribed burn and the Drala Mountain Center (formerly Shambhala Mountain Center), a near-miracle occurred.

Fire In Paradise

A Must Watch video for our community by Frontline PBS: Fire in Paradise. With sobering visuals, the show illustrates the incredibly rapid advance of the Camp Fire and the subsequent events in Paradise, CA on the morning of Nov 8, 2018.
Stopping Wildfires

We’ve spent 100 years growing a tinderbox across the West. Now it’s wildfire season. Controlled burning – an indigenous tradition that’s been used for millennia – might be a solution.
Restoration in a Fire Forest:
The Benefits of Burning

Wildfire has historically played an important role in the health and structure of Oregon's dry forests. Prescribed fire is a valuable tool used to restore forest health, increase firefighter safety, and better protect nearby human resources in these fire-adapted landscapes.
Fighting Fire with Fire: Cultural Burning Practices Used as a Tool for Preventing Wildfires

Ron Goode led UC Davis students through a cultural burn, teaching the practices of Native American Cultural Burning.
Armed Against Wildfires
Weather Warriors

Despite heavy fire suppression efforts over the last hundred years, our changing climate and consistent dry weather has led to the evolution of fire “season” into a year-round crisis. As prevention is key, Boulder, Colorado-based organization Wildfire Partners seeks to help mitigate the level of fire damage in their local community.
Your Home and Wildfire:
Choices That Can Make a Difference

Homeowners can play an important role in making key choices that help protect their homes against wildfire risks. Wildfire embers, or fire brands, can be blown up to 2 miles away from the main wildfire, and land on vulnerable areas of your home and surrounding property. Making smart choices about landscaping, removing debris like pine needles and leaves, and establishing clearance zones can help keep your home safer from wildfire. Science has proven that taking precautions like these can make a difference when your home is at risk from wildfire.
Harden Your House

Did you know that most of the homes lost in wildfires are not lost due to the flame front, but due to burning brands and embers that can blow in from up to two miles away? That’s why we often see burning homes next to green trees. One of the most important things you can do as a homeowner is “ember harden” your home.
Living (Dangerously) in an
Era of Megafires

A Yale Environment 360 video goes onto the front lines with Colorado fire crews who have watched as massive, months-long wildfires have become a regular occurrence in their state.

Reminder
 - 90% of the homes lost in wildfires are not lost due to the flame front, but due to burning embers that can blow in from up to two miles away? One of the most important things you can do as a homeowner is “ember harden” your home. Check out the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety March 2019 Wildfire Demo here.
